El retrato es,en su acepci#243;n habitual,la representaci#243;n de los rasgos de un ser humano,es decir,de su rostro o de la figuraentera.Siempre ha sido,y es a#250;n,un tema importante en las artes figurativas y caro a los artistas,que han encontrado en #233;l,adem#225;s de un g#233;nero profesional bien retribuido y socialmente apreciado por su valor simb#243;lico o conmemorativo,tambi#233;nuna oportunidad muy interesante para indagar sobre la condici#243;n humana observada desde el punto de vista f#237;sico y,sobretodo,psicol#243;gico.Es este #250;ltimo punto de vista el que tiende a predominar en los tiempos modernos,ya que la fotograf#237;a,como es sabido,ha reducido mucho la funci#243;n del retrato dibujado y pintado entendido como #250;nico medio para reproduciry transmitir los rasgos fison#243;micos de un individuo.Pero #233;ste era,evidentemente,tan s#243;lo uno de los aspectos (el “documental”) del retrato art#237;stico.Reflexionando sobre mi experiencia de retratista,ilustrador y profesor,he tratado de simplificar y de compendiar en una visi#243;nde conjunto los principales problemas con los que normalmente se topa uno al empezar a afrontar el dibujo de la cabeza“gen#233;rica”y,posteriormente,del verdadero retrato parecido.Algunos temas de especial importancia (por ejemplo:el dibujo de las manos,el retrato de los ni#241;os y de los ancianos,el retra-to de la figura entera,las “cabezas caracter#237;sticas”,etc.) deber#225;n ser necesariamente profundizados y a ellos se dedican otrosvol#250;menes de esta serie. Giovanni Guglielmo Civardi naci#243; en Mil#225;n el 22 de julio de 1947. Licenciado en Econom#237;a, estudi#243; posteriormente en la Facultad de Medicina y en la Scuola del Nudo de la Accademia di Brera, y se dedic#243; al retrato y a la escultura. Durante m#225;s de una d#233;cada realiz#243; ilustraciones para diarios, revistas y cubiertas de libros. Organiz#243; muestras personales de escultura y ampli#243; sus estudios anat#243;micos durante frecuentes estancias en Francia y en Dinamarca. Desde hace muchos a#241;os dirige cursos de anatom#237;a y de dibujo de la figura humana, y ha condensado su experiencia did#225;ctica en numerosos libros, reeditados con frecuencia. La mayor#237;a de ellos han sido traducidos a varias lenguas (ingl#233;s, franc#233;s, espa#241;ol, ruso, alem#225;n, japon#233;s, etc.). De 2011 data el Cuaderno de Lourdes, el m#225;s reciente de sus apuntes de viaje. Actualmente vive y trabaja en Mil#225;n, Casteggio y Niza.
